Summary

Sumatriptan is a 5-HT1B/1D agonist that is metabolized by MAO-A, and concurrent MAO inhibition may raise its exposure. Serotonin syndrome has been reported with triptans in combination with serotonergic drugs. Rasagiline is selective for MAO-B, so the risk is lower than with nonselective MAOIs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Rasagiline and Sumatriptan intranasal can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive serotonergic effects, with possible reduced sumatriptan metabolism if MAO-A selectivity is lost.

What to do

Monitor for serotonin syndrome symptoms and keep rasagiline within its labeled dose. Use the lowest effective sumatriptan dose.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
