Summary
Tyramine-rich foods can cause hypertensive reactions in patients on MAO inhibitors. At recommended rasagiline doses (selective MAO-B inhibition) the risk is low, but higher doses or loss of selectivity increase it.
What this interaction means in plain words
Rasagiline and Tyramine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition reduces tyramine breakdown, increasing norepinephrine release and pressor response.
What to do
Keep to the recommended rasagiline dose and avoid very large tyramine loads such as aged cheeses, cured meats and yeast extracts. Advise patients to seek care for severe headache or markedly raised blood pressure.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
