Summary

Corticosteroids given with non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockers, mainly during prolonged use in critically ill patients, have been associated with acute myopathy. This can prolong weakness and delay weaning from ventilation. A single local triamcinolone injection carries much lower risk.

What this interaction means in plain words

Rocuronium and Triamcinolone acetonide injectable can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Corticosteroids and prolonged neuromuscular blockade both injure muscle, probably through myosin loss and denervation-like changes.

What to do

Limit the duration and dose of the blocker and the steroid in critically ill patients. Watch for persistent weakness and consider creatine kinase measurement.

What to ask your pharmacist
