Summary

Both are MAO inhibitors, and selegiline at antidepressant doses loses MAO-B selectivity. Combining them risks nonselective MAO inhibition with hypertensive crisis and serotonin toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Safinamide and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Additive MAO inhibition leads to loss of selectivity and accumulation of monoamines.

What to do

Do not combine. Allow at least 14 days between stopping one MAO inhibitor and starting the other.

What to ask your pharmacist
