Summary

Trifluoperazine is a phenothiazine antipsychotic that can prolong the QT interval. Salmeterol can also cause tachycardia, hypokalemia and QT prolongation, particularly at high doses or with excess use. Combining them may modestly increase the risk of arrhythmia in susceptible patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Salmeterol and Trifluoperazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation and possible beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia.

What to do

Monitor ECG and serum potassium in patients with cardiac disease, electrolyte disturbance or other QT-prolonging drugs, and avoid exceeding the labeled salmeterol dose.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
