Summary

Trifluoperazine has some anticholinergic activity that adds to scopolamine, increasing the chance of dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision and confusion. Reduced gut motility may also change oral absorption of the antipsychotic, and heat intolerance is a concern.

What this interaction means in plain words

Scopolamine and Trifluoperazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive muscarinic blockade, with possible altered absorption due to slowed gastrointestinal motility.

What to do

Monitor for anticholinergic adverse effects and for reduced antipsychotic effect; minimize doses and avoid in patients with glaucoma or urinary obstruction.
