Summary
Osmotic bowel preparations can cause fluid loss and electrolyte disturbance, and volume depletion increases the risk of kidney injury. Streptomycin is nephrotoxic and ototoxic and is cleared renally, so dehydration may raise its exposure and toxicity. Magnesium may also add to aminoglycoside neuromuscular effects.
What this interaction means in plain words
Sodium sulfate / potassium sulfate / magnesium sulfate and Streptomycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Volume depletion and electrolyte shifts impair renal function and reduce aminoglycoside clearance, with possible additive neuromuscular effects of magnesium.
What to do
Ensure adequate hydration and check renal function and electrolytes around the bowel preparation. Consider timing the preparation away from streptomycin doses or reducing the dose in renal impairment.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
