Tetracycline + Zinc sulfate

For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: High

Zinc forms chelates with tetracycline in the GI tract, reducing tetracycline absorption and potentially decreasing antimicrobial efficacy; zinc absorption may also be reduced.

Mechanism of action

Pharmacokinetic: divalent cation chelation in the gastrointestinal tract forms nonabsorbable complexes, lowering tetracycline bioavailability (and possibly zinc).

Clinical management

Avoid coadministration; if needed, administer tetracycline at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after zinc. Monitor for reduced clinical response to tetracycline; consider alternative antibiotic or route if separation not feasible.
