Résumé
Gemifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone that can modestly prolong the QTc, and pimozide has a pronounced dose-related QTc-prolonging effect. Using them together adds to delayed repolarisation and raises the risk of torsades de pointes, especially with hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, bradycardia or structural heart disease.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Gemifloxacin and Pimozide are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Gemifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Pimozide belongs to Central Nervous System.
Pourquoi elle survient
Additive blockade of cardiac repolarising potassium currents (hERG)
Conduite à tenir
Do not co-prescribe; choose an agent without QT liability. If one drug cannot be stopped, correct electrolytes and monitor the ECG closely.
