Sintesi
Fluoroquinolones carry a risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, which is increased by concomitant systemic corticosteroids. The risk is greater in older patients, transplant recipients and those on prolonged therapy.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Betamethasone and Ciprofloxacin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Betamethasone belongs to Endocrine; Ciprofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Perché avviene
Additive tendon toxicity: fluoroquinolones damage tenocytes and collagen while corticosteroids impair tendon healing and matrix synthesis.
Cosa fare
Avoid the combination in older patients where alternatives exist. Instruct patients to stop ciprofloxacin and rest the limb if tendon pain or swelling develops.
