Sintesi
Red yeast rice contains monacolin K, identical to lovastatin, which is extensively metabolized by CYP3A4. Ritonavir is a potent CYP3A4 inhibitor and can greatly increase statin exposure, leading to myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Red yeast rice and Ritonavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Red yeast rice belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Ritonavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Perché avviene
Ritonavir strongly inhibits CYP3A4 and markedly increases monacolin K (lovastatin) exposure.
Cosa fare
Do not combine; stop red yeast rice while on ritonavir. Choose an alternative lipid-lowering agent such as pravastatin or rosuvastatin with dose limits per labeling.
