Vasodilating agent (nitric oxide donor); relaxes smooth muscle via dose-dependent dilation of arterial and venous beds to reduce both preload and afterload, as well as myocardial oxygen demand; also improves coronary collateral circulation, lowering blood pressure, increasing heart rate, and causing occasional paradoxical bradycardia

Unknown Nitrate for angina and heart failure. No adequate human studies; embryotoxic in rabbits only at 35 to 150 times human doses. US label: use only if benefit justifies risk. Avoid maternal low blood pressure, which can reduce blood flow to the placenta.

Unknown Not known if it passes into milk; no published data and no LactMed record. US label: use caution while breastfeeding. Discuss regular use with a doctor; a better-studied option may be preferred.
