Resumo
Both drugs prolong the QT interval, and combined use raises the risk of torsades de pointes and sudden cardiac death. Droperidol carries a boxed warning for QT prolongation, and sotalol itself has a high intrinsic proarrhythmic risk.
O que esta interação significa em palavras simples
Droperidol and Sotalol are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Por que acontece
Additive blockade of cardiac potassium channels (hERG/IKr) causing delayed repolarization and QT prolongation.
O que fazer
Avoid the combination; choose a non-QT-prolonging antiemetic or sedative such as ondansetron alternatives with lower risk only after ECG assessment. If unavoidable, use continuous ECG monitoring and correct potassium and magnesium first.
O que perguntar ao farmacêutico
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
