Drug interactions
alosetron + ciprofloxacin
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Ciprofloxacin is a CYP1A2 inhibitor and alosetron is metabolized in part by CYP1A2. Higher alosetron exposure raises the risk of serious gastrointestinal effects such as ischemic colitis and severe constipation. Alosetron labeling advises against use with strong CYP1A2 inhibitors, and ciprofloxacin is a notable example.
Mechanism of action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits CYP1A2, reducing alosetron clearance and increasing its exposure.
Clinical management
Avoid the combination and choose a non-interacting antibiotic where possible. If it is unavoidable, counsel the patient to stop alosetron and seek care for constipation, abdominal pain or bloody stools.
