Summary

Ibuprofen can reduce renal clearance of amikacin, raising its serum levels and the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. This has been described mainly in preterm neonates treated for patent ductus arteriosus.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amikacin and Ibuprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amikacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Ibuprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

NSAID-induced reduction in renal prostaglandins and glomerular filtration decreases aminoglycoside elimination.

What to do

Monitor amikacin serum concentrations and renal function, and adjust the dose or interval accordingly. Take particular care in neonates and patients with renal impairment.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
