Summary

Arformoterol, a long-acting beta2 agonist, can cause tachycardia, hypokalemia and QT prolongation, and amiodarone itself prolongs the QT interval. Combined use may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmia.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amiodarone and Arformoterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amiodarone belongs to Cardiovascular; Arformoterol belongs to Respiratory.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation, with beta2-agonist-induced hypokalemia potentiating the effect.

What to do

Monitor ECG and serum potassium and magnesium, particularly at initiation. Reassess the need for the combination if QTc lengthens substantially.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
