Summary

Oral calcium citrate has very little effect on amlodipine in practice. A large increase in serum calcium could theoretically reduce the antihypertensive effect of the calcium channel blocker. Clinically relevant loss of blood pressure control is uncommon at usual supplement doses.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amlodipine and Calcium citrate have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Raised serum calcium can theoretically antagonize calcium channel blockade pharmacodynamically.

What to do

No routine change is needed; check blood pressure if high-dose calcium or vitamin D is started. Check serum calcium if blood pressure control worsens unexpectedly.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
