Summary
Both thiazide diuretics and SSRIs such as citalopram can cause hyponatremia, and the risk is greatest in older adults and women. Thiazide-induced hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia may also add to citalopram's QT-prolonging effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Citalopram can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Citalopram belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive effects on sodium homeostasis (thiazide natriuresis plus SSRI-related SIADH), with electrolyte disturbance increasing QT risk.
What to do
Check serum sodium, potassium and magnesium at baseline and within the first weeks of therapy, and replace deficits. Watch for confusion, falls or palpitations, and consider an ECG in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
