Summary
Heparin suppresses adrenal aldosterone secretion, which can reduce renal potassium excretion. When combined with valsartan, hyperkalemia can occur, especially with prolonged heparin use, renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Heparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine-hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Heparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of aldosterone synthesis adds to the potassium-retaining effect of angiotensin receptor blockade.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and creatinine if heparin is continued for more than a few days, and more often in renal impairment or diabetes. Treat hyperkalemia and review other potassium-raising drugs if it occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
