Summary

Amoxapine is a sedating antidepressant with dopamine-blocking activity, so combining it with cariprazine can increase sedation, extrapyramidal symptoms, and the risk of tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Additive anticholinergic and cardiac effects are also possible.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amoxapine and Cariprazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression and dopamine D2 antagonism.

What to do

Monitor for sedation, extrapyramidal symptoms and akathisia, and use the lowest effective doses. Consider an antidepressant without D2 blockade if movement symptoms develop.
