Summary

Thyroid hormone can increase sensitivity to catecholamines, and tricyclic antidepressants such as amoxapine may potentiate this. The combination can increase the risk of tachyarrhythmias and CNS stimulation, and can also speed the antidepressant response.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amoxapine and Levothyroxine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Thyroid hormone increases adrenergic receptor sensitivity, adding to the noradrenergic effects of the tricyclic antidepressant.

What to do

Monitor heart rate, rhythm and mental status, particularly when starting or changing the levothyroxine dose. Keep thyroid status in the euthyroid range.
