Summary

Oral fecal microbiota spore products work by restoring gut flora after recurrent C. difficile infection. Residual antibiotics can kill the administered bacterial spores or the germinating organisms and reduce efficacy. Antibiotic exposure shortly before or during dosing is therefore undesirable.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and Microbiota can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Antibacterial activity against the live bacterial content of the product impairs engraftment and colonization.

What to do

Complete antibiotic therapy and allow a washout interval, as stated in the product labeling, before giving the microbiota product. Do not give systemic antibiotics concurrently unless essential.
