Summary

Amphotericin B wastes potassium through the kidney, and corticosteroids can further lower potassium. Combined use may cause marked hypokalemia, which can provoke arrhythmias and weakness, particularly in patients receiving digoxin or other QT-prolonging drugs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amphotericin b and Dexamethasone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amphotericin b belongs to Anti Fungals; Dexamethasone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive renal potassium excretion from amphotericin B tubular toxicity and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid activity.

What to do

Check serum potassium and magnesium at baseline and regularly during therapy, and supplement as needed. Use ECG monitoring if levels are low or other arrhythmogenic drugs are given.
