Summary
Amphotericin B can cause hypokalemia and other electrolyte disturbances such as hypomagnesemia. These disturbances can enhance and prolong the neuromuscular blockade from rocuronium, increasing the risk of prolonged paralysis and respiratory depression.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amphotericin b and Rocuronium can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amphotericin b belongs to Anti Fungals; Rocuronium belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Amphotericin B-induced hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia potentiate non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockade (indirect pharmacodynamic synergism).
What to do
Check and correct serum potassium and magnesium before and during anesthesia. Monitor neuromuscular function with train-of-four and be prepared for prolonged ventilatory support.
What to ask your pharmacist
