Summary

Both fluoxetine and the beta-agonist arformoterol can prolong the QT interval, and beta-agonists can also lower potassium. Together they may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmia, mainly in patients with cardiac disease.

What this interaction means in plain words

Arformoterol and Fluoxetine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Arformoterol belongs to Respiratory; Fluoxetine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive effects on cardiac repolarization, with beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia as a further contributor.

What to do

Monitor ECG and serum potassium in patients with cardiac disease or other QT risk factors. Use the lowest effective arformoterol dose.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
