Summary

Human coagulation factor X is given to restore clotting activity in hereditary factor X deficiency, whereas argatroban is a direct thrombin inhibitor that suppresses fibrin formation. Argatroban may blunt the hemostatic effect of the factor X concentrate. Legacy claim of Xa inhibitor antagonism does not apply to argatroban, which acts on thrombin.

What this interaction means in plain words

Argatroban and Factor x human can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic opposition: factor X replacement promotes thrombin generation while argatroban directly inhibits thrombin.

What to do

Avoid giving argatroban with factor X concentrate unless thrombosis risk clearly requires it. If both are needed, monitor clinical bleeding and coagulation tests (aPTT, factor X activity).

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
