Summary
Corticotropin stimulates endogenous corticosteroid release, and corticosteroids given with nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockers have been linked to acute quadriplegic myopathy, especially in critically ill patients on prolonged infusions. Risk is greatest with prolonged ventilation and high steroid exposure.
What this interaction means in plain words
Atracurium and Corticotropin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Atracurium belongs to Musculoskeletal; Corticotropin belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive muscle toxicity from corticosteroid-induced myopathy and prolonged neuromuscular blockade; the exact mechanism is not fully established.
What to do
Limit the duration and dose of neuromuscular blockade in patients receiving corticotropin, and monitor for persistent weakness and creatine kinase elevation.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Atracurium with Corticotropin?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Atracurium and Corticotropin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
How serious is the interaction between Atracurium and Corticotropin?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Limit the duration and dose of neuromuscular blockade in patients receiving corticotropin, and monitor for persistent weakness and creatine kinase elevation.
What other medicines interact with Atracurium?
MediHelp also lists interactions of Atracurium with, for example, Amikacin, Bacitracin-neomycin-polymyxin, Benzhydrocodone / acetaminophen. The full list is on the Atracurium page.
