Summary

Both drugs depress the central nervous system, so combined use can cause more drowsiness, dizziness, impaired coordination and slowed psychomotor performance. Falls and next-day impairment are a particular concern, because flurazepam's active metabolite has a long half-life, especially in older adults.

What this interaction means in plain words

Baclofen and Flurazepam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression through GABA-B agonism (baclofen) and GABA-A positive modulation (flurazepam).

What to do

Start with the lowest effective doses and titrate slowly, and counsel patients about driving and operating machinery. Monitor older or frail patients for sedation, confusion and falls, and consider reducing the benzodiazepine dose.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
