Summary
Both drugs depress the central nervous system, so the combination can cause greater sedation, dizziness, impaired psychomotor performance and, at higher doses, respiratory depression. Older patients and those with respiratory disease are most vulnerable.
What this interaction means in plain words
Baclofen and Quazepam can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression from GABA-B agonism (baclofen) and GABA-A positive allosteric modulation (benzodiazepine).
What to do
Use the lowest effective doses of both drugs and monitor for oversedation and respiratory depression. Counsel patients to avoid driving, alcohol and other sedatives.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
