Summary
Barbiturates induce hepatic enzymes and can lower concentrations of estrogens and bazedoxifene. This may reduce symptom control and, importantly, may weaken endometrial protection from bazedoxifene while estrogen effect is still present.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bazedoxifene-conjugated estrogens and Butabarbital can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Barbiturate induction of CYP3A4 and glucuronidation increases clearance of both components.
What to do
Monitor for loss of efficacy of vasomotor symptom relief and for abnormal uterine bleeding, which warrants evaluation. Consider an alternative sedative if the interaction is clinically relevant.
What to ask your pharmacist
