Summary

NSAIDs increase bleeding risk when combined with low molecular weight heparins by impairing platelet function and damaging gastric mucosa. Bemiparin's anticoagulant effect adds to this, and spinal or epidural hematoma risk is also a concern in neuraxial procedures.

What this interaction means in plain words

Bemiparin and Etodolac can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive hemostatic impairment through factor Xa inhibition by bemiparin and COX-1 mediated platelet inhibition by etodolac.

What to do

Avoid the combination when possible and use non-NSAID analgesia. If used together, monitor for bleeding and check hemoglobin.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
