Summary

Pentobarbital may add to the blood pressure lowering of benazepril and cause hypotension, particularly orthostatic hypotension. The effect is more likely with parenteral or high doses and in volume-depleted patients.

What this interaction means in plain words

Benazepril and Pentobarbital can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Barbiturate-induced central nervous system depression and vasodilation add to the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibition.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure when pentobarbital is started or the dose increased, and counsel the patient to rise slowly. Reduce the antihypertensive dose if symptomatic hypotension occurs.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
