Summary
Formoterol and thiazide diuretics can each lower serum potassium, and together the hypokalemia may be more pronounced. Low potassium raises the risk of arrhythmias, particularly in patients with cardiac disease or hypoxia. The effect is mostly relevant with higher beta-agonist doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bendroflumethiazide and Budesonide-formoterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from beta-2 agonist-driven intracellular potassium shift plus thiazide-induced renal potassium loss.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, especially at the start of therapy or when beta-agonist use increases. Replace potassium or add a potassium-sparing agent if levels fall.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
