Summary
Dextroamphetamine increases release of monoamines including serotonin, and combined with buspirone this may raise the risk of serotonin toxicity. Amphetamines can also raise blood pressure and cause agitation, which may confound recognition.
What this interaction means in plain words
Buspirone and Dextroamphetamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Buspirone belongs to Central Nervous System; Dextroamphetamine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive serotonergic activity from amphetamine-induced monoamine release and buspirone 5-HT1A agonism.
What to do
Monitor for agitation, tremor, tachycardia and hyperthermia, especially when doses are started or raised. Stop the agents if serotonin syndrome is suspected.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
