Summary
Bacteriostatic tetracyclines may blunt the killing activity of bactericidal beta-lactams in laboratory and some clinical settings, as beta-lactams work best on actively dividing bacteria. The clinical importance is greatest in severe infections such as meningitis or endocarditis, and is uncertain in mild infections.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefuroxime and Minocycline have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefuroxime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Minocycline belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism, since growth inhibition by minocycline reduces the cell-wall synthesis on which cefuroxime depends.
What to do
Avoid combining the two in serious infections where rapid bactericidal activity is needed unless there is a specific indication. For mild infections, no change is needed, but review the response to therapy.
