Summary

A bacteriostatic tetracycline may reduce the bactericidal effect of a beta-lactam, which requires actively growing bacteria. This is mostly shown in vitro and in older clinical data, and matters mainly in severe infections.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefuroxime and Tetracycline have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Cefuroxime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Tetracycline belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic antagonism, as inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis limits the growth needed for beta-lactam killing.

What to do

Avoid the combination in life-threatening infections such as meningitis unless clearly indicated. In milder infections, monitor clinical response.
