Summary
Thiazides can raise blood glucose and so reduce the effectiveness of sulfonylureas such as chlorpropamide. Thiazides may also contribute to hyponatremia, which chlorpropamide itself can cause through increased antidiuretic hormone effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Chlorpropamide and Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Chlorpropamide belongs to Endocrine; Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Thiazide-induced hyperglycemia opposes sulfonylurea action, and both agents can lower serum sodium.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose and serum sodium after starting or changing the thiazide. Adjust the antidiabetic regimen or consider an alternative sulfonylurea if control is lost or hyponatremia occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
