Summary

Both agents promote potassium loss, so using them together increases the risk of hypokalemia. This can cause weakness, arrhythmias and increased digoxin sensitivity in susceptible patients. Dexamethasone may also blunt the antihypertensive effect through fluid retention, although it has minimal mineralocorticoid action.

What this interaction means in plain words

Chlorthalidone and Dexamethasone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Chlorthalidone belongs to Cardiovascular; Dexamethasone belongs to Endocrine.

Why it happens

Additive renal potassium wasting from thiazide-type diuresis and corticosteroid effects.
