Summary
Alkalinizing agents raise urinary pH and can reduce ciprofloxacin solubility, increasing the chance of crystalluria. Antacid effects may also slightly reduce absorption of oral ciprofloxacin.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ciprofloxacin and Sodium bicarbonate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ciprofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Sodium bicarbonate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Decreased urinary solubility of ciprofloxacin in alkaline urine, with possible reduced gastric absorption.
What to do
Maintain good hydration and monitor renal function and urinalysis for crystalluria. Take ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before the bicarbonate.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
