Drug interactions
Clonazepam + Diazepam
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Additive CNS and respiratory depression when two benzodiazepines are used together, increasing risk of excessive sedation, psychomotor impairment, falls, and overdose.
Mechanism of action
Pharmacodynamic: both are GABA-A positive allosteric modulators with additive depressant effects; minimal clinically relevant pharmacokinetic interaction.
Clinical management
Avoid concurrent benzodiazepine therapy. If short overlap is unavoidable (e.g., cross-taper), use the lowest effective doses for the shortest duration, schedule rather than PRN stacking, and closely monitor level of consciousness, respiratory rate/oxygenation, and fall risk; avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants; counsel no driving/operating machinery.
