Summary
Maprotiline blocks the neuronal uptake of noradrenaline and can block uptake of guanethidine-like agents into adrenergic neurons. This can reduce the antihypertensive effect of debrisoquine, leading to loss of blood pressure control.
What this interaction means in plain words
Debrisoquine and Maprotiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Inhibition of the amine uptake pump (norepinephrine transporter) that carries debrisoquine into adrenergic neurons.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure closely and expect to need a higher debrisoquine dose or a different antihypertensive. Re-check blood pressure if maprotiline is stopped, since debrisoquine effect may then return.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Debrisoquine with Maprotiline?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Debrisoquine and Maprotiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken. Maprotiline blocks the neuronal uptake of noradrenaline and can block uptake of guanethidine-like agents into adrenergic neurons. This can reduce the antihypertensive effect of debrisoquine, leading to loss of blood pressure control.
How serious is the interaction between Debrisoquine and Maprotiline?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor blood pressure closely and expect to need a higher debrisoquine dose or a different antihypertensive. Re-check blood pressure if maprotiline is stopped, since debrisoquine effect may then return.
