Summary
Deflazacort is a corticosteroid and, like hydrochlorothiazide, can lower serum potassium. Used together they may cause clinically significant hypokalemia and may also reduce antihypertensive efficacy through sodium and fluid retention.
What this interaction means in plain words
Deflazacort and Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive renal potassium wasting from thiazide-induced distal sodium delivery and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid activity.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and blood pressure, particularly during long-term corticosteroid therapy. Replace potassium or adjust therapy if hypokalemia develops.
