Summary

Both salbutamol and corticosteroids such as deflazacort can lower serum potassium. Together, especially with high-dose or nebulized salbutamol, hypokalemia may develop and predispose to arrhythmia or muscle weakness.

What this interaction means in plain words

Deflazacort and Salbutamol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Deflazacort belongs to Miscellaneous; Salbutamol belongs to Respiratory.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive hypokalemia from beta-2 stimulated intracellular potassium shift and corticosteroid mineralocorticoid-related renal potassium loss.

What to do

Monitor serum potassium when high doses of salbutamol are used with deflazacort, particularly in severe asthma or with other potassium-lowering drugs. Replace potassium if low.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
