Summary

Thyroid hormone can enhance the sensitivity of adrenergic receptors to tricyclic antidepressants, increasing the risk of tachycardia, arrhythmias and CNS stimulation. The same interaction is sometimes used deliberately to augment antidepressant response.

What this interaction means in plain words

Desipramine and Thyroid desiccated can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Thyroid hormone increases catecholamine receptor sensitivity, potentiating the cardiovascular and CNS effects of tricyclics.

What to do

Monitor heart rate, rhythm and mood, particularly in patients with cardiac disease or when doses change. Check thyroid function and adjust doses to avoid over-replacement.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
