Summary
Growth hormone inhibits 11-beta-HSD-1, which may reduce activation of cortisone, so patients on replacement glucocorticoids may need higher doses. Conversely, supraphysiologic glucocorticoid doses can blunt the growth-promoting effect of somapacitan.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dexamethasone and Somapacitan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dexamethasone belongs to Endocrine; Somapacitan belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Growth hormone inhibition of 11-beta-HSD-1 and pharmacodynamic antagonism of growth effects by glucocorticoids.
What to do
Monitor growth response and adrenal status, and adjust glucocorticoid replacement dose after somapacitan is started. Use the lowest effective dexamethasone dose where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
