Summary
Reduced gastric acidity impairs conversion and absorption of non-heme oral iron. Prolonged PPI use can therefore blunt response to oral iron supplements. The effect may be smaller with polysaccharide iron complexes but is still possible.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dexlansoprazole and Polysaccharide iron can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Elevated gastric pH reduces solubilization and absorption of oral iron.
What to do
Monitor hemoglobin and ferritin; if response is inadequate, consider a different iron regimen, taking iron with vitamin C, or intravenous iron.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
