Summary
Amphetamines release serotonin and norepinephrine, and combining them with an SSRI can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Sertraline may also modestly increase amphetamine exposure via CYP2D6.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dextroamphetamine and Sertraline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dextroamphetamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Sertraline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive serotonergic activity plus weak CYP2D6 inhibition by sertraline.
What to do
Monitor for agitation, tremor, hyperthermia, tachycardia and diarrhea, and use the lowest effective amphetamine dose. Stop the drugs if serotonin syndrome is suspected.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
