Summary
MAO inhibition enhances the norepinephrine releasing effect of amphetamine. This can cause severe hypertension, hyperpyrexia and hypertensive crisis.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dextroamphetamine transdermal and Linezolid are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Linezolid MAO inhibition slows amphetamine metabolism and potentiates monoamine release.
What to do
Do not combine; amphetamine is contraindicated during or within 14 days of MAOI therapy. Choose a non-MAOI antibiotic or hold the amphetamine and monitor blood pressure.
