Summary
Amphetamines cause large releases of norepinephrine and dopamine, and MAO inhibition makes this release far more potent. This can produce hypertensive crisis, hyperpyrexia and cerebrovascular events.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dextroamphetamine transdermal and Tranylcypromine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Enhanced monoamine release with blocked MAO-mediated degradation produces an exaggerated adrenergic response.
What to do
Do not use during or within 14 days after stopping tranylcypromine. Choose an alternative treatment that does not involve sympathomimetics.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
