Drug interactions
doxycycline + iron (oral)
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Oral iron forms complexes with doxycycline in the GI tract, reducing doxycycline absorption and potentially decreasing antibacterial efficacy; iron absorption may also be reduced.
Mechanism of action
Chelation/complexation with divalent/trivalent cations → decreased oral bioavailability of doxycycline; possible reciprocal reduction in iron absorption.
Clinical management
Avoid coadministration; separate doses (give doxycycline at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after iron). Monitor infection response; consider alternative antibiotic or parenteral iron if separation not feasible.
